Spanish 101: Before we Dive in
What Methods will I use to Learn Spanish?
A long while ago, I started listening to a podcast – Learn Spanish with Paul Nobel, in an effort to practice listening and pronunciation. I really enjoy the way this podcast goes about learning a second language, where the method is to be introduced to words and ideas that will be brought up repeatedly, helping us remember organically through the process rather than forcing ourselves to remember. It also teaches us both Latin American and Castilian Spanish, which is great for listening and understanding the differences from the beginning. This podcast includes a pdf review booklet, that is purely meant for review and the main learning will occur through the audio, but still provides a great source of information and something I can refer back to.
“I don’t want you to make an effort to remember what I teach you. In fact, strange as it might sound I’m actually quite happy for you to forget.”
– Paul Nobel
Apart from the podcast, I am fortunate to have family and friends who speak Spanish, giving me opportunities to practice with them and go outside my comfort zone. Even switching out words or phrases I already know in Spanish, and bringing them to my everyday speech with those who can help me will make a difference.

How will I Document my Process?
I am someone who prefers to write by hand rather than typing, however I’d like to branch out and try documenting or presenting my work through video, voice note or other means of media. In saying that, I will always have a written copy of my progress (digital or physical) and webs of brainstorming / my thinking that I will also be inclined to share.
As for what I will be documenting or the process of it, I will explain what I already know (in the next post) and go from there. It may take a few tries until I find a process of learning, documenting, and sharing that I am happy with. Keeping in mind and more a reminder for myself that this is an inquiry, things take time especially when learning and attempting is a part of the process.
And with that, we can now dive in!
